Idols goes Social in Season 8

After seven successful seasons, Idols Season 8 is set to be the biggest season yet.

On behalf of DStv Online, DLDE will generate original and exclusive multimedia content to be published across numerous official platforms: including the official Idols SA website, the Facebook account and the Twitter presence.

What’s new is our social networking strategy. Unlike previous season’s where the Idols were left to their own devices, DLDE will create and manage their online profiles. Each Idol, from the Top 18 onwards, will receive an account on both Facebook and Twitter that will be managed and maintained for them with a number of updates daily. Updates will include pics, videos of their performances and training, and articles outlining their progress in the competition. We’ve also trained all 18 of the hopeful talents to update the sites themselves with anecdotes and daily events.

During the live shows on Sundays at 17:30 or Tuesdays 19:30, DLDE will be updating live across all the platforms. Contestants twitter accounts will be promoted on the show and in turn direct the fans to exclusive videos housed on the official site. As soon as a performance is complete and Proverb outlines how to vote for your favourite, the performance will be ready for viewing and sharing. To get this exact timing right, DLD has multiple teams operating simultaneously: one to capture, cut and upload the performance, another at the production house with the contestants to assist them with tweets, and another at the office to upload and update the website.

In addition to the highlight performance material, DLD will do exclusive shoots on Friday and Tuesday nights, getting backstage during makeup, rehearsals and pre performance energy. Wednesdays a team is sent to the Idols house to capture interviews, diary sessions, and general behind-the-scenes footage of the Idols at ease and having fun. Look out for the absurd clips produced in the category called Vote or Dare: each week the contestants will issue a dare that they will fulfill in the event they’re voted in. Ideas range from stripping off and jumping into the pool (in the middle of winter), to shaving hair off.

This year, the show is broadcast on both M-Net and Mzansi Magic.
