PC and PVR Kill the Video Store

DStv made history in July last year when it launched the first phase of the highly anticipated Video-on-Demand service, BoxOffice, and Don’t Look Down is playing a major role in the online publicity for the innovative new service.

A pay-per-view movie rental service available to PVR MultiChoice subscribers, BoxOffice boasts up to 15 of the latest blockbuster movies – with some available on the same day as they are released on DVD. Don’t Look Down has been commissioned to maintain the BoxOffice micro-site, a promotional website featuring trailers for movies currently available on your PVR, plus some of the titles coming soon. Users can also make use of a reminder function for future titles’ release date and time.

The next step, BoxOffice PC, is currently available as a beta phase and is an online offering available to all South African broadband users. Don’t Look Down will be in charge of the upload and coordination of all movies to this service, giving users an extra opportunity to stream and download the latest Hollywood blockbusters to their personal computers. The PC interface to this service boasts a catalogue of almost 50 blockbusters available at any given time.

Some popular titles that have been available on PVR and PC recently include Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, The Hangover 2 and X-Men: First Class. Movie rentals are priced from R25 to R33 per movie.

According to John Kotsaftis, CEO of DStv Online, “BoxOffice positions DStv as a front-runner in the VOD market in South Africa. This service aligns South Africa with global developments in on-demand video. Offering a VOD service via satellite initially, allows us to make it widely and instantly available to our subscribers, regardless of constraints in broadband availability in South Africa.”
